Father’s Day History

Sonora Dodd is credited with creating the idea of celebrating fatherhood with a special holiday called Father’s Day after listening to a Mother’s Day sermon at her church. Her father had raised her and her five siblings after her mother died in childbirth, so she wanted to do something to honor the many sacrifices that he had made for his children.

The first Father’s Day was held on June 19, 1910, but it didn’t become a national holiday until President Nixon signed a law in 1972 to make the third Sunday of June the official Father’s Day each year.
