Valentine’s Day Math and Vocabulary Activities for Early Learners
1. Valentine’s Day Sizes Sorting and Ordering for Toddlers & Preschoolers
Can your toddlers and preschoolers order items from big to small or reversely, from small to big?
If not, here’s how to teach them to order by size, starting with objects:
For your toddlers, grab some objects and toys from around your house. Select two objects that are clearly different sizes and ask them to point to the item that is bigger and then the one that is smaller. Repeat with different objects until they are correct each time.
Next, you can show them two objects, then point to one and ask them to tell you if it’s big or small.
Once they can verbally (and correctly) tell you which one is big and which is small, then it’s time to move on to printed pictures.

Next Step: Using pictures of objects
Use the Valentine’s Day Language Skills Printable Packet for Early Learners: Valentine Sizes in the Free Resource Library for your printed pictures.
Print and cut out the cards from the packet. Give your child 1 set of 4 cards at a time: ie., all 4 of the conversation heart cards. Ask your child to find the smallest one. Then the biggest one. Then see if they can fill in the two cards in the middle in the correct order so that they are lined up from smallest to biggest.
Next, see if they can sort them from biggest to smallest.
Finally, point to each card and label the cards out loud for your child: small, medium, big, or really big.
Or you can teach them small, smaller, smallest and big, bigger, and biggest by removing one of the four cards and showing them just three at a time.
When introducing new words or concepts just make sure you follow these 3 steps to reduce frustration and to help their understanding:
- Show and tell them what it’s called.
- Ask them to point to one that you name out loud.
- Point to one and ask them to tell you what it’s called.
Also included in the Valentine’s Day Language Skills Printable Packet for Early Learners in the Free Resource Library is a Valentine’s Day vocabulary matching game.

2. Valentine’s Day Vocabulary Matching Game for Toddlers & Preschoolers
You’ll want to print the matching game pages on cardstock for the best results. It comes in both a black and white set and a colored set for printer-ink friendliness.
Or, for more of a challenge for your little ones, print one sheet as black/white and one colored page.
Next cut out cards and lay them face down on the table.
Then have your child turn over two cards. Encourage your child to say the name of each card they turn over. If they don’t know what it is, tell them and let them repeat it after you.
Now, if they turned over a match, they get to keep the matching cards. If not, have them turn the cards back face down and it’s the next person’s turn.
Finally, whoever has the most cards at the end of the game, wins.
Here’s a list of the Vocabulary Words for Preschoolers in the matching game:
- Teddy bear
- Valentine card
- Box of chocolates
- Chocolate candy
- Cupcake
- Dress
- Envelope
- Gift (or present)
- Hard candy
- Conversation heart
- Chocolate kiss
- Locket
- Rose (or rosebud)
- Hearts
- Candy
- Lollipop
You’ll find the matching game included in the Valentine’s Day Language Skills Printable Packet for Early Learners in the Free Resource Library.

Valentine’s Day Vocabulary and Grammar for Early Elementary up to High School
This Valentine’s Day Language Arts Vocabulary & Grammar Activity Packet resource for homeschooling families helps your child learn new vocabulary words as well as work on grammar skills.
The packet includes three levels of Valentine’s Day vocabulary word lists PLUS a printable Silly Sentences worksheet for each level.
First, print out the vocabulary word cards that best fit your child’s ability level: PreK to 2nd grade; Upper Elementary; and Middle to High School.
Next, have them cut the word cards out. Then ask them to sort the vocabulary word cards into the parts of speech categories.
For PreK and Lower Elementary use these categories: Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives.
For Upper Elementary and Middle/High School use these categories: Nouns, Verbs, Adjectives, and Adverbs.
Some of the words appear more than once in the list because they can be used in more than one way. For example, the word โpresentโ is both a noun and a verb. So you’d put one of the cards labeled โpresentโ in the noun group and the other card labeled โpresentโ into the verb group.
If your child needs a refresher on the parts of speech and what they do, watch these classic School House Rock videos.
For younger kids, I recommend the Jack Hartmann Kids Music Channel’s fun parts of speech videos.
Now for the fun Silly Grammar Sentences part!
Turn all of the vocabulary word cards face down. Have your student pick one card from each group. Then let them write those words down on the Valentine’s Day Silly Sentences Writing worksheet in the appropriate spaces: N for nouns, V for verbs, etc.
Finally, have them make up a silly sentence using all of those words in the large box. They can even draw a picture of the silly sentence if they’d like.
Make more copies of the Silly Sentences Worksheet if they enjoy the activity and want to create more Valentine’s Day silliness.
